Project Details
This project came to life when I heard about the Camp Kesem service activity on campus. I was told in the student center at Southern Utah University about the Camp Kesem and that it was a camp that was for kids who had parents who had been affected by cancer. When I heard about the details of the camp it moved my heart and I knew that I had to take this opportunity to help these kids.
In order to become a camp counselor, I had to attend training, weekly meetings, help with fundraising, and raise 500 dollars on my own to help get enough money to send all the kids that we could to out camp for free. It was a lot of work but it definitely started teaching me a lot about how to be a good leader.
When the date of the camp finally arrived, I was so excited to see the kids and their excited faces. that was when I started to fall more into my leadership role. I was in charge of a group of girls as well as a unit leader over four groups of kids as well as their counselors. We had activities planned every day from morning to night for a week and I had to manage the group through it all. It was definitely a great experience and I would definitely do it again.
